- Macedonia (State) (in Macedonian, Makedonija), officially ancient People's republic of Macedonia, country of oriental Europe, in the peninsula of the Balkans, lined in the North by the Federal republic of Yugoslavia (Serbia and Montenegro), in the East by Bulgaria, in the South by Greece, in the southwest and on the West by Albania. The surface of the country is of 25 713 km2, its capital is Skopje.
Member of the ancient federative Republic of Yugoslavia, the Republic of Macedonia proclaimed its independence in September, 1991. A dispute with Greece, concerning its name and its flag, returned its actual international recognition only in 1993, date in which the new State is allowed to the UNO under the FYROM's official name (Former Yougoslavian Republic of Macedonia).
