- Ireland, republic of, officially republic or Free state of Ireland (in Gaelic, Poblacht nah-Éireann), country occupying the northwest and the South of the island of Ireland in the Atlantic Ocean, on the West Great Britain from which it is separated by the Irish Sea and the Holy canal George. The republic of Ireland, of which the capital is Dublin, covers 70 280 km2 on the 84 000 km2 with total surface of the island. Independent since 1921, after seven centuries of British dominion against which built up itself national identity, the country includes Leinster's historic provinces, Munster and Connacht as well as three of nine counties of Ulster. The six other counties of this province form the Ulster, which is a part of United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ulster.
