The current territory (329 556 km2) contains three provinces stemming from the colonial division: Tub Ky ( Tonkin), Trung Ky ( Annam) and Nam Ky ( Cochin China). 17-th parallel served of artificial border between the North and the South of the country between 1954 and 1976. Today, reunited Viêtnam possesses a political capital in the North, Hanoi, whereas its main economic metropolis, Hô-Ch Minh-Ville, is in the South.
