- Jordan, officially Realm hachémite of Jordan, country of Near East, lined in the North by Syria, in the northeast by Iraq, in the East and in the South by Saudi Arabia, in the southwest by the Red Sea with the bay of Akaba, on the West by Israel. The country, of which the capital is Amman, covers a surface of 89 000 km2. Jordan gave up in 1988 its rights on the West Bank of Jordan (5 787 km2), occupied by the Israeli army since 1967, for the benefit of the Palestinians.
